The RAPSA Board of Directors has announced the winners of the 2020 RAPSA Awards. Please join us on Wednesday, November 18th at 1:00 P.M. to celebrate their accomplishments.
RAPSA Vision Award
Dr. Ruiz De Velasco
The RAPSA Vision award recognizes vision in pursuing creative policies to attract and retain students who would otherwise be left out by traditional school programs.
A researcher at Stanford University’s John Gardner Center, Graduate School of Education Department, Dr. Ruiz de Velasco’s history of leadership includes work with California’s Alternative Schools Taskforce which has led to the adoption of alternative metrics by the State Board of Education for schools serving at-promise youth.
RAPSA Heart Award
Prakash Antony
The Heart Award recognizes leaders with a capacity to see beyond the trauma faced by at promise students and reengage them with respect and integrity.
Mr. Anthony works as Principal at the Thomas J.S. Waxter Children’s Center, a juvenile detention school for girls located in central Maryland. He has served there for thirteen years supporting young women placed in a non-traditional educational setting. The Board recognized “calm and caring demeanor which has allowed him to build lasting rapport with students who have suffered from different traumatic events.”
RAPSA Courage Award
The RAPSA Courage Award celebrates students who have faced unusual barriers to completing their high school education and did so recognizing the value of a high school diploma for personal, family or community accomplishments. The Courage Award includes a $1,000 scholarship to assist with post-secondary education expenses at either a career technical institution, a college or a university.
